In einem plötzlich aufziehenden Gewittersturm stranden sechs Menschen mitten in weiten Natur auf dem Lande. Zwischen den Bowers, bestehend aus Vater David, seiner zweiten Frau Rosemary und der siebenjährigen Tochter Judy aus erster Ehe herrscht eh schon angespannte Stimmung, weil Rosemary das puppenliebende Kind verabscheut. Notgedrungen müssen sie Unterschlupf in dem nahegelegenen alten Landhaus des alten Ehepaars Gabriel und Hilary Hardwicke suchen, die als Puppenmacher tätig sind. Kurz darauf stößt auch noch der tolpatschige Ralph und die beiden Punkerinnen Isabel und Enid dazu. Während Judy und der verspielte Ralph von den vielen Puppen begeistert sind, wollen die Eltern nur so schnell wie möglich weg, während die Anhalterinnen planen, mit den Reichtümern der Hausbesitzers noch einen kleinen Reibach zu machen. Doch die Nacht hält für alle Schrecken bereit, denn die vielen Puppen im Haus sind höchst lebendig und reagieren auf die Absichten ihrer Besucher durchaus empfindlich...
