Der einflussreichste Filmemacher des letzten Jahrhunderts, Alfred Hitchcock, steckt mitten in den Vorbereitungen zu seinem späteren Meisterwerk "Psycho" mit Janet Leigh, Vera Miles und Anthony Perkins. Ihm zur Seite steht seine Ehefrau und Partnerin Alma Reville, deren Beziehung zu ihrem Gatten eine zentrale Rolle im Film einnimmt. Die Filmbranche ist skeptisch gegenüber dem neuen Projekt und versagt die Finanzierung. Der inzwischen 60-jährige Filmemacher wird von einigen Produzenten für zu alt und sein Projekt für nicht gut genug gehalten. Hitchcock ist jedoch dermaßen überzeugt von dem Drehbuch, dass er selbst für die Kosten der Produktion aufkommen möchte. Basiert auf dem Sachbuch "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho" von Stephen Rebello.
